The Case for Support
We live in a world cluttered with messages across mediums and continents. The constant barrage forces consumers to discern if they are hearing opinion, truth, or some combination. Citizens consequently search for a trusted source to stay informed. They increasingly turn to public radio stations, including WGLT on the Illinois State University campus.
WGLT's call letters stand for We Gladly Learn and Teach, which reflects ISU's motto. A service of the University, its staff of experienced radio broadcasters provide an unbiased source of local and national news. Listeners also appreciate a mix of ideas with music that ranges from acoustic to jazz and blues.
Independent journalism has never been more important. News outlets in Illinois and across the nation are struggling in the face of dwindling budgets and shrinking staff. WGLT—which avoids commercial restraints through listener and corporate support—excels in the work of reporting. The station consistently captures regional and national accolades for journalistic excellence, including two prestigious Edward R. Murrow awards.
The quality of programs nurtures a listening audience that values civic engagement, accuracy, honesty, reasoned analysis, and civil discourse. All are now jeopardized by the station's aging equipment and an inadequate facility, which hinder WGLT's mission to provide a deeper understanding of diverse issues, people, and cultures.
Through Redbirds Rising: The Campaign for Illinois State, we seek to protect, sustain, and enrich the essential public service WGLT provides across Central Illinois and far beyond via the Internet. With your support, the station will continue to be a trusted voice of reason and source for lifelong learning.
