Mary Alice Katschke Endowed Scholarship in Elementary Education

This scholarship was established by Jean and Randy Kaufman and friends in 2009 in memory of Jean's mother, Mary Alice Katschke. The purpose is to provide financial assistance to students at Illinois State who intend to become elementary education teachers. Mary earned her B.S. in 1952 and taught in public schools until her retirement in 1994. She believed it was important for children to learn to read at an early age. Each candidate must be a junior or senior majoring in elementary education at Illinois State, demonstrate interest in teaching reading at the elementary education level, have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0/4.0, demonstrate financial need, and be involved in community or university service activities.
