Honan grew up on a farm and graduated first in her high school class. She and her sisters taught in country schools and attended summer school at Illinois State Normal University. Honan studied home economics and worked as an RA in Fell Hall. After graduating from ISNU in the early 1930's, she worked in the Home Extension Service in Indiana. She encouraged and helped her nieces and nephews to go to college, and most attended ISNU for at least part of their education. Peg Hoffman, one of the nieces and one of the founding donors, also grew up on a farm and graduated from ISNU, taught home economics, and worked for the Extension Service. The award is given to a faculty member who has made a significant contribution to the Department of Family and Consumer Sciences through their research or scholarly activities.
