School of Teaching and Learning General Fund

The School of Teaching and Learning General Fund supports the activities, programs and operations associated with the School of Teaching and Learning in the College of Education at Illinois State University.

Eleanor Kong Memorial Endowed Scholarship in Education

The Eleanor Kong Memorial Endowed Scholarship in Education was established in 2011 by the family of Eleanor Kong who wanted to make sure that her life and commitments were remembered and honored in perpetuity. Eleanor came to the U.S. with her family in 1991. Eleanor became a Golden Apple Scholar in 1993 and completed her life-long dream of becoming a teacher when she earned her undergraduate degree in elementary education from Illinois State University in 1997. She taught in the Chicago Public School System before she returned to Illinois State University to teach and to complete her graduate degree. Her life ended in September 1999 at the young age of 24. Even though she was unable to fulfill her ultimate goal of completing a doctoral degree in education, this scholarship will allow her dream to continue to help others to become teachers who impact the lives of their students.

School of Teaching and Learning Undergraduate Scholarship

The School of Teaching and Learning Undergraduate Scholarship (formerly known as Curriculum and Instruction) is awarded to a junior-level student majoring in early childhood, elementary, or junior high/middle school education.

Dr. Savario J. Mungo Endowed Scholarship

The Dr. Savario J. Mungo Endowed Scholarship was established in 2000 by the Illinois State University branch of the Collegiate Middle Level Association to honor Savario J. Mungo at his retirement. This scholarship is awarded to a senior in the middle level teacher education program in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction.

Jannes (Teply) and Dr. Gary Weede Endowed Elementary Education Scholarship

Jannes and Gary Weede were first generation college graduates coming from families of modest means. They had to work their way through all of their earned degrees. Jannes taught for 24 years at Fairview Elementary School in Normal and had the privilege of supervising numerous Illinois State University student teachers during her teaching career. During his teaching career in the Industrial Technology Department at Illinois State, Gary developed a plastics technology program, served as graduate coordinator and taught various manufacturing and graduate courses in Engineering Technology. He retired after 28 years at the University. The Weedes possess a strong desire to provide support to students with financial need in the College of Education at Illinois State University. The purpose of this fund is to assist education majors as they pursue their dreams of becoming teachers.

The School of Teaching and Learning Scholarship Fund was established in 2009 as a general scholarship fund for students through the School of Teaching and Learning in the College of Education at Illinois State University.

Judith Roberts Busey Scholarship

The Judith Roberts Busey Scholarship was established in 2007 by Judith and John Busey to express their desire to encourage college students to pursue an interest in the teaching profession. Judith graduated from Illinois State Normal University (ISNU) in 1962 with a bachelor's degree in education. After graduating she taught second grade in Pekin IL. She taught at the elementary level as a full-time and substitute teacher for almost 20 years, retiring in 2000.

William and Linda Peine Lewis Endowed Scholarship

This endowment was created in 2003 by William and Linda Peine Lewis to pay tribute to the excellent education they both received at Illinois State University. This scholarship is awarded to incoming freshmen, sophomores, juniors, or seniors who are enrolled as an elementary education or early childhood education major in the College of Education/Curriculum and Instruction Department at Illinois State University. Preferences will be given to applicants who are graduates of a high school from Kane, Clay, or Effingham counties in Illinois.

Charlotte Corray Kinkade Endowed Scholarship

The Charlotte Corray Kinkade Endowed Scholarship Fund for middle level education was created in 2006 by Charlotte Corray Kinkade. Charlotte Kinkade established this scholarship to provide financial support for students who plan to become teachers of language arts in middle schools.

Holmes Scholar Fund

The Holmes Partnership, a national consortium of universities, is committed to improving the quality of schooling through research and development, and preparation of education career professionals. The purpose of this fund is to support ISU Holmes Scholars. The fund was initially established with gifts from alumni and friends of the Department of Curriculum and Instruction. Candidates must have: possession of outstanding credentials for graduate study; formal admission to a doctoral degree program in the College of Education in a school-related area of emphasis; membership in one of the following groups: African American, Asian American, Hispanic American, Native American, or other groups underrepresented on faculties of education. Preference will be given to candidates with outstanding records as K-12 teachers, potential for leadership in education, and plans to pursue a career in higher education.

Lillian Scholljegerdes Davies Scholarship

The Lillian Scholljegerdes Davies Endowed Scholarship was established by Lillian's colleagues and family as a living memorial in her honor. Lillian was an Illinois State University faculty member, who served as an academic advisor and an associate professor of elementary education from 1963-1973 before she retired. Candidates should be elementary education majors, hold a 3.0 GPA, and be nominated by a pre-student teaching supervisor for reading and/or language arts methods clinical assignments.

O. Lillian Barton - Adeline Stevenson Nurse Scholarship

Adeline Stevenson Nurse made a bequest through her will to ISU. The fund is to be held in perpetuity, and the income used for the education of students majoring in elementary education. All elementary education major students are eligible for consideration for the scholarship. This account was combined with the O. Lillian Barton Fund. The O. Lillian Barton Scholarship was established by the women of Barton Hall and friends of Dean Barton emeritus in 1958. The award is to assist a senior woman while student teaching. Candidate must be: a female student at ISU; enrolled in teacher education; student teaching at the time the award is made; have a good academic record; and have a demonstrated financial need. Assets of this endowment are invested in the ISU Endowment Investment Pool.

Louise Purnell Jones Scholarship

The Louise Purnell Jones Scholarship endowment was established in 1995 by Louise Purnell Jones, a 1940 graduate of ISNU. This scholarship is awarded to junior or senior students majoring in elementary education.

Vicki Lynn (Crook) Dechman Memorial Education Scholarship

This scholarship was established in memory of Vicki Lynn (Crook) Dechman by her husband of 42 years, Bernard "Dutch" Dechman. Vicki received her bachelor's degree in art from Illinois State in 1967 and her master's from Bank Street College of Education. Dutch received his bachelor's from Blackburn College in 1969 and his master's degree in psychology from Illinois State in 1972. They married in August, 1970. Vicki worked for the Carlinville Public School District for 34 years, most of those as the elementary art teacher. She was devoted to her students and an advocate for the more challenged student. Dutch was a school psychologist in Alton for 35 years. The purpose of this scholarship is to provide financial assistance to undergraduate students pursuing a career in teacher education.

Mary Alice Katschke Endowed Scholarship in Elementary Education

This scholarship was established by Jean and Randy Kaufman and friends in 2009 in memory of Jean's mother, Mary Alice Katschke. The purpose is to provide financial assistance to students at Illinois State who intend to become elementary education teachers. Mary earned her B.S. in 1952 and taught in public schools until her retirement in 1994. She believed it was important for children to learn to read at an early age.

Tom and Betty Tegtmeyer Education Scholarship

The Tom and Betty Tegtmeyer Education Scholarship scholarship was established in 2012 by Tom Tegtmeyer in memory of his wife of 32 years. The purpose is to provide financial assistance to graduates of Ottawa High School who intend to pursue a career as an elementary education teacher. Betty graduated from Ottawa High in 1965 as a member of the National Honor Society. Tom and Betty both graduated from Illinois State University, Betty in 1969 and Tom in 1970. Betty's teaching career, mostly at the fourth grade level, took her to Lake Zurich and Cincinnati. She found time away from teaching to raise two children, Kelly Ann and Bradley. Betty cherished her students' comments, "You are tough, but always fair." She always took new teachers under her wing, sharing materials with them. A memorial garden was dedicated in her honor by the administration of the elementary school where she taught in Ohio.

Pyrle G. Barclay Endowed Scholarship in Elementary Education

The Pyrle G. Barclay Endowed Scholarship in Elementary Education was established by family members of Pyrle Barclay to recognize her achievements as an elementary school teacher. The scholarship is awarded to an Illinois State University student who is a graduate of Warrensburg-Latham High School or an entering or continuing student from Macon County majoring in elementary education. If there are no applicants who are graduates of Warrensburg-Latham High School or from Macon County, the scholarship may be awarded to any student from Central Illinois majoring in Elementary Education. The award is based on academic accomplishments and financial need.

School of Teaching and Learning Minority Recruitment Fund - Students/Faculty

This fund is to be held in perpetuity, and the income used for the recruitment of both minority students (undergraduate and graduate) and faculty. The chairperson of the School of Teaching and Learning (formerly the Department of Curriculum and Instruction) in consultation with program coordinators will be responsible for determining the recruitment activities on a yearly basis.

Nan Schuman Klein Future Teacher Scholarship

Nancy Jo Schuman graduated from Illinois State University in 1973, earning a B.S. in education. She taught elementary school for more than four years and continued to take classes at the University to earn her M.S. in special education. Before she could complete her degree, she moved to California where she entered the business field and became a human resources executive. Many of the skills that she learned at Illinois State enabled her to lead and train her teams of employees to achieve success in their careers. Meanwhile she married and had one child. Nan never forgot her teaching years and has created this scholarship to support students in their dreams of becoming teachers. She also has a special regard for persons who come into teaching having been in a previous career. Those individuals will receive special attention in the application process.

Spycher Award in Graduate Reading Studies Endowed Scholarship

The Spycher Award in Graduate Reading Studies was originally established in 2007 by a gift from an anonymous donor. No longer anonymous, this award has been created by and is named in honor of Dr. Ellen Spycher (ISU Doctorate 2003, M.S.Ed. 1997, and retired faculty) and her husband, Mr. Richard Spycher, who wanted to provide financial support for the cost of tuition for graduate students pursuing the Master of Science in Education degree program with a concentration in reading, as offered through the Department of Curriculum and Instruction. Each candidate must be enrolled in good standing, have a minimum of three years of full-time teaching experience, have successfully completed at least two required courses in the program, and submit an essay and a reference.

Dorothy Miko Endowment

The Dorothy Miko Endowment was established in 1999 by Dorothy Miko, who earned her teaching certificate in 1938 and a bachelor of science degree in education in 1963 from Illinois State Normal University. The scholarship is awarded to a senior student with a major in early childhood or elementary education who plans to teach reading in the primary grades.

Kelly Endowed Scholarship Fund for Elementary Education

The Kelly Endowed Scholarship Fund for Elementary Education endowment was created in 2003 by Clint Kelly in honor of his wife Sue.

Janet Weldon Noah Memorial Scholarship

The Janet Weldon Noah Memorial Scholarship fund was created in 2005 by James. E. Noah in memory and honor of his wife. The purpose of this scholarship is to provide financial support to ISU students planning to become teachers and who are enrolled in the early childhood major.

School of Teaching and Learning Graduate Research and Development Scholarship

The School of Teaching and Learning Graduate Research and Development Scholarship provides support for graduate students working toward a graduate degree in the School of Teaching an Learning (formerly the department of Curriculum and Instruction). All graduates admitted to a graduate program who have completed 12 ISU hours of graduate instruction are eligible for consideration for the Graduate Research and Development Scholarship.

Dorothy Pratt Myers College of Education Scholarship

The Dorothy Pratt Myers College of Education Scholarship was established by the Myers Family Foundation (Beverly Nelson and Dennis Myers) in order to honor Dorothy Pratt Myers who had a successful career in the family business of crop protection. Dorothy, a 1950 graduate of ISNU, taught for four years but her strong foundation as an educator transferred into other positions she held after leaving the classroom.

Endowment for Mary and Jean Borg Center for Reading and Literacy

The purpose of this fund is to support the mission and work of the Mary and Jean Borg Center for Reading and Literacy: to improve the reading and literacy achievement of all citizens by providing support to local school districts and community groups, employers, regional offices of education, and relevant state agencies. In 2008, by action of the Trustees of the University, the Center for Reading and Literacy in the College of Education was renamed in honor of Mary Borg, Jean Borg's mother, and in recognition of Jean Borg's generous gifts to the Illinois State University Foundation. Born in 1901, Mary was a women's rights advocate. She was a high school graduate, a nurse, a composer, and a seamstress. Jean admired her mother's independent spirit and encouragement. Following her graduation from ISNU in 1950, Jean enjoyed a long and successful career in education.
