College of Education General Fund

The College of Education General Fund supports the general operating needs of the College of Education at Illinois State University. Educator preparation is a university-wide effort that includes five colleges and enrolls more than 5,000 students. Nearly one-fourth of the 22,000 students who attend the University are enrolled in an educator preparation program.

The purpose of this fund is to provide financial resources to support a variety of eductional needs of the college, its three departments of Special Education, Curriculum and Instruction, and Educational Administration and Foundations and its two laboratory schools, University High School and Thomas Metcalf School.

Sharon and Stephen Hagge Endowment for Innovation in Education

To establish an endowed fund supporting pre-service and in-service teachers with innovative technology that promotes the values of one of the largest and finest education colleges in the nation. The Sharon and Stephen Hagge Endowment for Innovation in Education will allow the College of Education and all of Teacher Education at ISU to explore new teaching and learning strategies that embrace technology in meaningful ways across barriers.

Dr. William D. Zeller College of Education Scholarship

The Dr. William D. Zeller College of Education Scholarship Fund was established by Mary B. Zeller. This fund was created to provide financial assistance for those studying Education and preparing to teach in high school.

Eitenmiller Family Scholarship in Education

The Eitenmiller Family Scholarship in Education was established in 2021 by Anna Marie and John Eitenmiller to support a first generation college student majoring in education. Anna Marie and John Eitenmiller were moved to establish a scholarship after long and successful careers in education. Their passion for supporting students stems from the success they witnessed, seeing the difference in the lives of students impacted by well prepared and highly trained educators.

College of Education Student Persistence Fund

The College of Education Student Persistence Fund was established in 2023 to encourage and support deserving students in the College of Education with demonstrated financial need.

Ralph E. Grimm, Sr. and Ralph E. Grimm, Jr. College of Education Scholarship Fund

Family members of Ralph E. Grimm Sr. and Ralph E. Grimm Jr. were moved to establish this scholarship to honor the commitment to education instilled in each of them. While Ralph E. Grimm Sr. did not graduate from college, he had a successful career as an industrial electrician. He was an avid reader and lifelong learner. His son, Ralph E. Grimm Jr., a graduate of Illinois State University '83 M.S. '86, went on to have an impactful career in education, retiring as a superintendent of Galesburg School District.

R. Douglas & Janice Luecke Irvine Scholarship in Education

The R. Douglas and Janice Luecke Irvine Scholarship in Education was established in 2016 by Doug and Janice Irvine to support students majoring in Special Education with emphasis on teaching the visually impaired. Janice and Doug met in the spring semester of their freshman year at Illinois State Normal University and married in the summer following their graduation from Illinois State University in 1967. Janice majored in Education of the Blind and Visually Impaired and taught the Blind and Visually Impaired for the South Bend Community School Corporation for 26 years. Doug completed a comprehensive major in the Social Sciences and taught on the college level for several years, served in administration, and retired after serving as a college financial aid administrator for several Indiana schools. Doug and Janice strongly believe in giving back to Illinois State and created the R. Douglas and Janice Luecke Irvine Scholarship to support students with financial need.

Caffey Family Memorial Scholarship

To establish an award supporting Scholarship for students pursuing a degree in education. Brandon, Rodney and Gregory, all graduates of Illinois State University, were moved to establish this scholarship because of the importance of education instilled in them by their parents and their desire to impact students at Illinois State University, through the legacy of a scholarship to honor their family.

Fell Hall Friends, Class of 1961 Endowed Teaching Scholarship Council for Teacher Education

The Fell Hall Friends, Class of 1961 Endowed Teaching Scholarship was established in 2009 as a restricted scholarship. As of June 30, 2012, the fund became endowed. It was established by a group of alumni who refer to themselves as the Fell Hall Friends. They all lived in Fell Hall during their time as students at Illinois State University. They all graduated with degrees in education and became teachers. They feel so strongly about the excellent education that they received here that they created this scholarship to provide financial assistance to students planning to enter the education field and become teachers. The Fell Hall Friends desire to create this scholarship as a lasting legacy and symbol of their belief in the University's commitment to excellence in education.

Jared Iman Washington Memorial College of Education Scholarship

The Jared Iman Washington Memorial College of Education Scholarship was established in 2019 by Christopher Marks. The scholarship provides support for students majoring in elementary, middle, or secondary level teacher education in the College of Education at Illinois State University. Applicant must submit personal statement addressing their motivation to become an educator, including the importance and value of diversity and students of color in the field of education. Preference is given to students with demonstrated financial need.

College of Education Global Initiatives Fund

The College of Education Global Initiatives Fund will be used for support of the College of Education international education initiatives. Support may include student travel scholarships, faculty international travel, financial support to visiting scholars, scholarly publication dissemination to international audiences, and other needs as designated by the College of Education.

The College of Education Scholarship Fund was established in 2008 to provide support for College of Education student scholarships.

Sally Bulkley Pancrazio Endowed Scholarship

The Sally Bulkley Pancrazio Endowed Scholarship endowment was established in 2001 by Cecilia J. Ryan-Lauby to honor the career and accomplishments of Sally Pancrazio at the time of her retirement. This scholarship is awarded to a graduate or undergraduate student (of at least junior standing) in the College of Education with a strong commitment to a career in public education.

Bowman Fellows Endowment

The Bowman Fellows was established in 2004 in honor of Illinois State University President Al Bowman. In 2012 the fund was permanently endowed through a gift from John '81 and Therese '81 Rigas to pay tribute to Bowman's legacy as he announced his retirement as president. Under Bowman's leadership, Illinois State was transformed into a first-choice Illinois public university, ranking for seven straight years as one of the top 100 public universities in the nation for quality and value. The average freshman ACT, retention rate and graduation rate achieved historic highs. Bowman joined the University in 1978 as a faculty member in the Department of Speech Pathology and Audiology. He served as department chair for eight years. Bowman Fellows are education majors committed to being visionary leaders on campus, in their communities, and in their future field of education.

Eunice Speer Scholarship

The Eunice H. Speer Scholarship was established in 1974 as a tribute to Eunice H. Speer in recognition of her retirement following 30 years of service to Illinois State library science. From 1974 to 1987, scholarships were awarded to students for scholastic achievement and service to Mu Chapter of Alpha Beta Alpha. In 1987 the library science program was phased out, and fund purpose changed to support library staff and faculty with opportunities to improve their education. In 2007, the University developed coursework leading to endorsement as Library Information Specialists and the fund has returned to its original purpose of providing scholarships to students studying library science. In 2017 the Post-Baccalaureate Program in School Librarianship, moved from Milner Library to the College of Education and selection of the recipients and fiscal oversight moved to the Dean of College of Education.

Charles DeGarmo Scholars Endowment

The Charles DeGarmo Scholars Endowment was established in 1993 by the College of Education to memorialize Charles DeGarmo who was an outstanding student, teacher, principal, and professor. It is awarded annually to a graduate or undergraduate student with a strong commitment to a professional career in public education.

College of Education Dean's Faculty Development Endowment Fund

The College of Education Dean's Faculty Development Endowment Fund was created in 2009 to provide support for faculty development and professional activities.

Franson-Anderson Memorial Scholarship Fund

The Franson-Anderson Memorial Scholarship was established in memory of Ida Franson, a class of 1952 graduate of Illinois State University, and her husband Eugene "Jerry" Anderson. A life-long resident of Niles, Illinois, Ida served as a substitute teacher for the Niles school district for more than 30 years and as a volunteer for the school library for several more years following her retirement from teaching. She was best known for her commitment to her profession, a willingness to share her experience with others, and an uncanny capacity to memorize names and faces. The Franson-Anderson Memorial Scholarship is awarded to a full-time undergraduate student admitted to teacher education, preferably elementary education, and planning a career in the teaching profession. The award may be used to support expenses associated with an international educational experience endorsed through Illinois State University (e.g. student abroad, student teaching, alternate spring break programs, etc.)

Chicago Teacher Education Pipeline Fund

The purpose of this fund is to provide financial resources to support a variety of educational needs of the Chicago Teacher Education Pipeline by providing readily available resources to enhance educational processes for students and to continue staff development and employment.

Greenebaum Memorial Fund

Before her death in 2009, Elisabeth C. Greenebaum of Chicago arranged for a gift to Illinois State to establish an endowment to provide scholarships for students studying to become teachers. All scholarships shall be made in memory of Elisabeth; her parents, Helen Greenebaum and Jacob Greenebaum; and her brother, Henry E. Greenebaum. Elisabeth graduated from the University of Chicago. She had wanted to pursue a graduate degree at Illinois State, but caring for her parents and the family business prevented that. Henry served in the Army, graduated from Northwestern University, traveled extensively, and helped with the family business. Candidates must have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0/4.0, be enrolled in a teacher education program, and have demonstrated financial need.

Nancy and Robert Northrip Family Endowed Scholarship

The Nancy and Robert Northrip Family Endowed Scholarship was established in 2020 to provide financial assistance to a student enrolled in any discipline in the College of Education. Preference given to a student previously identified as a Golden Apple Scholar with demonstrated financial need.

Ferne Hinshaw-Hardt Endowed Scholarship Fund

In 1987, Darlene H. Baxter Severin, an ISNU '43 graduate who went on to teach 31 years, made provision through a bequest in her will to establish a scholarship fund in honor of her sister, Ferne Hinshaw-Hardt, to assist female students attending ISU, with priority given to graduates of Ridgeview High School with demonstrated need. Ferne had stepped in when their mother died, raised Darlene from age two, and encouraged her to seek a college degree. Candidates were to have a cumulative GPA of at least 2.5/4.0. In 2009, in consultation with the executor of Severin's estate, this award was updated to follow current practices of the College of Education. The purpose is now to provide financial assistance to female students majoring in education who intend to become teachers, have a cumulative GPA of at least 2.5/4.0, and have demonstrated financial need, with priority given to students from Central Illinois.

Hunkler-Stagen Teaching Scholarship

Patricia (Hunkler) and Larry Stagen started their "Pay-It-Forward" endeavor by establishing the Hunkler-Stagen Teaching Scholarship in memory of Pat's parents, Mildred and Ray Hunkler, and her grandparents, Ruth and John Hunkler. Each candidate must be enrolled as a new freshman or as an upper-class student in good standing at ISU; have plans to become a teacher; demonstrated financial need; submit an essay describing the student's desire to become a teacher; understand that the scholarship award will be applied to the student's tuition and fees; and submit two references from high school faculty (if entering freshman) or from university/college (if upperclassman). All things being equal, preference is to be given to students who are graduates of Farmer City Blue-Ridge High School, Deer Creek-Mackinaw High School, East Peoria High School, or Washington High School.

Dona Lewis Scholarship

The Dona Lewis Scholarship endowment was established in August of 1992 by the friends and family of Dona Lewis. This scholarship is awarded to students enrolled in the College of Education with an intent to teach.

Rollings Scholarship Fund

The Rollings Scholarship fund was created in 2005 by Kaci Sue Rollings, who graduated from ISU in 1994 with a Bachelor's Degree in Elementary Education. The scholarship is in honor of Kaci's grandfater Max Rollings (1916-2001). Both Kaci and Max have had a connection with ISU: Max was a sheet metal superintendent working on the first high-rise dormitories, and Kaci is a former student, now an alumna. The scholarship is Kaci's way of giving back to the university that supported her personally and professionally.

Jepsen International Scholars Program Endowment

This scholarship was established by Keith Jepsen and his wife Kathleen Dore. Following the attacks of 9/11 they wondered what they could do to support international understanding, and decided that the only long-term solution to the problems in the world is international education. Keith earned two degrees from Illinois State University, a B.S. in business teacher education in 1967 and an M.S. in counselor education in 1968. He has more than 45 years of experience in higher education in the international, national, state, and university levels. He was inducted into the College of Education Hall of Fame in 2010. Kathleen currently serves as the senior advisor, vision and strategy, for consulting firm Proteus International. Their hope is that this fund will encourage future teachers to experience different cultures while they are students.

Michael A. Lorber-Stella V. Henderson Kappa Delta Pi Scholarship

In the 1940s, the Stella V. Henderson Memorial Award was established by gifts from Kappa Delta Epsilon, Kappa Delta Pi Mu Chapter, and friends of Stella Henderson, an alumna and an advisor to Mu Chapter. In 2009, the COE Dean decided it was appropriate to review the award and process, and to follow current award and scholarship practices. The decision was made to honor the most recent and long term advisor of Mu Chapter, Professor Emeritus Michael A. Lorber, and to rename the award. The purpose of the fund is to encourage members of Mu Chapter, Kappa Delta Pi, to think about how they can implement the honor society's ideas. Two scholarships will be awarded annually as funds are available, ideally one for a graduate student and one for an undergraduate. Candidates must be or have been an active member of Mu Chapter, Kappa Delta Pi, at ISU; submit an essay; and plan to become a teacher.

Katherine McGorray Scholarship

The Katherine McGorray Scholarship was established through a bequest. Katherine McGorray graduated from Illinois State Normal University in 1892. The scholarship is awarded to promising students pursuing a degree in teacher education. Preference is giving to students with demonstrated financial need.

Karl Schmidt - Glenn Schlichting Sr Scholarship

Glenn T. Schlichting, Sr. & Karl G. Schmidt Scholarship Fund was established in 1999 by the families of these highly effective educators to honor their lifelong contributions as teachers, administrators and mentors to teachers. Both of these men dedicated their lives to children by striving to bring the best programs, teachers, resources, facilities, activities and learning experiences into the lives of students and their families.

Darlene Ann Sargeant Scholarship for Early Childhood Educators

The Darlene Ann Sargeant Scholarship for Early Childhood Educators was established by Rodney Sargeant in 2020 to provide support for a student pursuing a primary/elementary education degree. Preference will be given to a student with demonstrated financial need.

Class of 1929 Scholarship

The Class of 1929 Scholarship assists deserving students who plan to enter the teaching profession. Candidates must display academic proficiency and a desire to enter the teaching profession.

Class of 1934 Scholarship

In 1984 the Class of 1934 established a fund to endow a scholarship in teacher education. Members of the class were asked to contribute to the fund. At the class's 55th anniversary reunion in the spring of 1989, the scholarship was presented to the University. Candidates for the scholarship must be full time students at ISU, enrolled in the college of education, planning a career in the teaching profession, a student with a 3.0 or higher GPA on a 4.0 scale, actively involved in campus activities, and recommended by a member of the ISU professional staff. Assets of this endowment are invested in the ISU Endowment Investment Pool.

Howard Paul and Eithal Hanson Curry Scholarship

The Howard Paul and Eithal Hanson Curry Scholarship was established in 2002 through a trust in the will of Eithal Hanson Curry '46. It honors the teaching careers of her husband and herself. Both worked their way through college. Howard Paul Curry '45, M.S.E. '46, grew up in Waverly, taught at Irving Junior High School, and served as principal for many years at schools in Bloomington and Rockford. Eithal decided in third grade that she would be a teacher. She earned two teachers certificates and taught six years in South Dakota and several more years in Illinois before earning her college degree twelve years after graduating from high school. When she retired, she had taught school for 41 consecutive years. The scholarship is awarded to a sophomore, junior, or senior enrolled in the College of Education, with a 3.0/4.0 GPA, who plans to teach in grades K-8.

Isabelle S. Purnell Memorial Endowed Scholarship Fund for Future Teachers

The Isabelle S. Purnell Memorial Endowed Scholarship Fund for Future Teachers was established in 2009 through a bequest from the estate of Isabelle S. Purnell, who died in 2006 at the age of 93. She was born in Mahomet and received a B.S.E. from ISNU in 1938 and an M.S.E. from the University of Illinois in 1952. She worked most of her life at the U of I and traveled extensively. The purpose of this fund is to provide financial support to students who plan to become teachers and are enrolled as new freshman majors in the College of Education. Each candidate must be ranked in the top quarter of high school graduating class or have an ACT composite score of 24 or above or equivalent SAT score, and must have demonstrated leadership through involvement with extracurricular and/or community activities. The scholarship is to be used for educational expenses.

Anne 'Kiki' Wood Endowed Scholarship Fund

The Anne 'Kiki' Wood Endowed Scholarship was established in 2014 in memory of Kiki Wood by her husband, Dr. Jeffrey A. Wood, Dean of the College of Applied Science and Technology. The purpose of this scholarship is to provide financial support to a student pursuing an elementary education degree with a reading teacher endorsement. Kiki had a passion for teaching children to read and delighted in teaching children to make emotional connections to academic subjects. She infused agriculture into the curriculum by establishing a school wide Ag Day, linking local producers with eager children and created "farm baskets" for the McLean County Farm Bureau which became a popular addition to the school curriculum throughout Unit 5 and surrounding districts. She was widely known for the popular classes she created and taught many years in the ISU College for Youth. She was especially fond of teaching literature and language by using culture and cooking examples in her classes.

Class of 1937 Scholarship/Ruth Henline Scholarship

In June 1989 the class of 1937 and class of 1939 created two new endowments in honor of the late Ruth Henline. Ruth Henline was a member of the English Department faculty from 1926-1970, serving as the advisor to the Class of 1939 for four years. Both funds supported scholarships for education majors interested in teaching English. In 1992 the funds were combined into one fund to support scholarships for English education majors.

Mary Kathryn Merna-Mellon Endowed Scholarship Fund

This fund was created in 2006 by Edwin Dale Mellon in honor and in memory of his wife Mary, who passed away in 2002. Mary was born in Bloomington and lived on a farm in Merna, a town which was named after her grandfather. She began her education in a one-room, country schoolhouse and fulfilled her dream when she earned her bachelor of science in education degree from Illinois State Normal University in 1953. While teaching third and fourth graders at Roach School in Decatur, she met Edwin Mellon, who was also a teacher there. Together, they raised a family of five children, one daughter and four sons. The purpose of this scholarship is to honor Mary and her teacher education by providing financial support to a student pursuing his or her dream of becoming a teacher.

Raymond Rogina and Diane Cullen Scholarship

The Raymond Rogina and Diane Cullen Scholarship was established in 2021 by the Mayor of St. Charles and his wife, both career educators. Both financed their own educations and would like to help support a high school senior from St. Charles East High School who wants to attend Illinois State University to pursue a career in education. The scholarship supports an Incoming freshman graduating from St. Charles East High School majoring in any discipline intended for K-12 teacher education. Preference given to a student with demonstrated financial need.

Dr. Edna Bazik Endowed Mathematics Teaching Scholarship

This scholarship was created in 2011 by Edna Bazik to help provide financial support for students planning to become mathematics educators. At the time of the establishment of this scholarship she was a mathematics teacher, consultant, author, and associate professor of mathematics education at National Louis University. As a result of her outstanding commitment to excellence in teaching, she has received numerous awards and honors, including induction into the Illinois State University College of Education Hall of Fame in 2002.

James and Kathleen Schlesser Scholarship in Education

The James and Kathleen Schlesser Scholarship in Education was established and an expendable scholarship in 2018 to support student enrolled in the College of Education with demonstrated financial need.

Joseph A. Rives and Scott J. Brouette Endowed Scholarship Fund for LGBTQ Support in Education

The Joseph A. Rives '90, '94 and Scott J. Brouette '87, '89 Endowed Scholarship Fund for LGBTQ Support in Education was established in 2016 by Joseph Rives and Scott Brouette. The purpose of the fund is to provide scholarship support to a student accepted for enrollment or enrolled in good standing in the College of Education or any secondary education program at Illinois State. Preference will be given to students who demonstrate financial need and identify with the LGBTQ community.

Helen K. Ryan Scholarship

The Helen K. Ryan Scholarship was established by contributions received from Helen Ryan's many friends. Helen Ryan was a graduate of ISNU, a field representative for the Illinois Education Association, the Illinois representative to the National Education Association. At the time of her death, she was president of the ISNU Alumni Association. The scholarship varies in amount depending on available funds but is not less than $100.00.

Dr. Marilyn K. Moore Endowed Scholarship Fund

This scholarship was established in 2011 by Marilyn Moore's daughters and their husbands, as a surprise, to honor her for her many contributions to the field of education. Marilyn was born on the Southside of Chicago in 1946 and grew up in a time where there were many social injustices. She believed that it was unfair that opportunities were not the same for minority children, especially in relation to education. This motivated her to become a teacher. In 1989 she became a professor at Illinois State University. She organized Urban Bus Tours which take education majors to urban classrooms throughout Chicago and pair them up with inner-city elementary school students in mentor/mentee relationships. The purpose of this scholarship is to provide financial support for students majoring in elementary education or early childhood education who plan to become teachers for diverse populations.

Glynn-Bowlby Future Teacher Scholarship

The Glynn-Bowlby Future Teacher Scholarship endowment was created in 1999 by Carol Bowlby Glynn and Terry Glynn in honor of their parents who were ISNU graduates. The scholarship is awarded to students majoring in special education, early childhood education, elementary education, or mathematics education.

Roy O. Schilling Endowed Scholarship Fund

This scholarship was established by Roy O. Schilling in 2007 to help support a deserving student that plans to become a teacher. Roy began his career in 1935 with a teaching certificate. He received a Bachelor of Science in Education from Illinois State Normal University and a masters degree in 1942 from Columbia College, New York City. During his life he taught elementary school, served as a principal, was a supervisor of student teachers, was an elementary administrative assistant for the Decatur Public Schools, and was a visiting associate professor of education at Millikin University. He served on many educational boards and received many awards for his dedication and service. He received the Volunteer Service Award from President George W. Bush in 2006 as an acknowledgement of his dedication and impact on education.

Roth Family Scholarship

The Roth Family Scholarship was established in 2017 by Leonard Roth. The award supports an undergraduate student in the College of Education.

Larry and Barbara Efaw Scholarship

The Larry and Barbara Efaw Scholarship was established in 2004 by David and Dana Efaw in honor of David's parents. The scholarship is awarded to a full or part-time junior or senior student, majoring in Early Childhood Education, Elementary Education, Middle Level Education, or Business Education.

Class of 1932 Scholarship

This endowment was established in 1982 by the Class of 1932. The scholarship is awarded to students in the College of Education planning a career in the teaching profession.

Peg and Roy Van Meter Endowed Scholarship

The Peg and Roy Van Meter Endowed Scholarship in the College of Education was established in 2015. The scholarship is given to an undergraduate student who has completed at least 60 credit hours with a declared major in the College of Education. Peg Van Meter graduated from Illinois State University in 1965 and received her Master of Education degree from DePaul University in Chicago in 1983. She has also done a considerable amount of postgraduate work at Northern Illinois University in DeKalb. Peg taught in grades K-5 for 35 years, retiring in 2000. Roy Van Meter retired in January 2005 having worked for SKF/CR Industries in Elgin for 44 years. He has been involved with the manufacture of oil seals for the automobile and space industries, and has also served with the United States Army in Germany. Peg credits her late father, Howard B. Thomas, as the impetus behind her philanthropy and her husband, Roy, for his suggestion to make the first planned gift to Illinois State.

Carol T. Benson Endowed Elementary Education Mathematics Teaching Scholarship

The Carol T. Benson Endowed Elementary Education Mathematics Teaching Scholarship was established in 2019 to provide financial assistance to a student majoring in elementary education with a match resource. Preference is given to a student with demonstrated financial need.

The Verial F. Phillips Endowed Scholarship

To establish a one-time award supporting a current student or an incoming student or a transfer student in the College of Education majoring in Elementary Education and with financial need.

Jody M. Fitch Scholarship

The Jody M. Fitch Scholarship was established by her father, Thomas Fitch, Distinguished Professor Emeritus of science education. Thomas Fitch created this scholarship to honor her memory. It is his hope that each student recipient of the Jody M. Fitch Scholarship will make a positive impact on young people through his/her service as an elementary school teacher.

Sarah Hazel Buck Scholarship

The Sarah Hazel Buck Scholarship endowment was established in 1999 with an anonymous gift in memory of Sarah Hazel Buck who attended ISNU from 1914-1915. Sarah Hazel Buck was known in the field of education for her character and ambition.

Mary and Robert English Technology Award Endowment

The Mary and Robert English Technology Award Endowment was established in the fall of 2001 by Robert English in honor of his wife, Mary. Bob and Mary met at Illinois State University where she earned a B.S. in English education in 1968 and he earned a B.S. in business education in 1966 and a M.S. in business administration in 1967. In 1978, they started English & Associates, Inc., a consulting business in educational data processing; co-authored the Guide to Administrative Software; founded Continental Testing Services, Inc., a psychometric firm; and in 1984 started PMA Financial Services, Inc., an investment firm devoted to the public sector. Today their children manage the firm. The purpose of this award program is to assist and support disadvantaged students pursuing teaching professions and to encourage the use of technology in the classroom once they enter the field.

E. Jay and Marilyn J. Hammer Memorial Scholarship Endowment

The E. Jay and Marilyn J. Hammer Memorial Scholarship Endowment was established in December 2017 by Lyle Barry Hammer to honor the desire of his parents, E. Jay and Marilyn J. Hammer, in their estate to support the Charles DeGarmo Scholars Endowment. Both E.Jay and Marilyn J. Hammer have passed away. This gift is honoring their request to provide financial assistance to certain Illinois State University students. Preference is given to students with demonstrated financial need who intend to teach in Illinois schools.

Urban Teaching Scholarship College of Education

The Urban Teaching Scholarship was established in 2008 by anonymous donors. The purpose of the scholarship is to provide financial support for a senior student who is committed to urban teaching. Each candidate must: A. Be a full-time senior student and education major with a GPA of at least 3.0 on a 4.0 scale at the time of application. B. Be doing student teaching in an urban area. C. Be planning to teach in an urban setting following graduation. D. Submit an essay that discusses the candidate's commitment to urban teaching and the importance of urban education. E. Submit at least two references from a faculty member or other individual familiar with the student's commitment to urban education.

Howard and Naomi Oesch Scholarship

The Howard and Naomi Oesch Endowed Scholarship Fund was established by the naming of the College of Education as a charitable beneficiary through the Estate Trust of Naomi Oesch. Naomi Oesch created the scholarship to benefit elementary education students at ISU and to serve as a living memorial and legacy in honor of her husband, who died in 1979.

Donald F. and Mary Cay Hahn College of Education Scholarship

The Donald and Mary Cay Hahn Scholarship was established in 2017 by Mary Cay and Don Hahn. The purpose of the scholarship is to ensure the tradition and legacy of students from rural communities have the opportunity to be educated through the exemplary programs ISU offers through the College of Education. Their desire to focus on recruitment of students as education majors to ISU reflects their passion for education and teacher preparation as well as the impact ISU had on their lives as educators and administrators.

Dr. Stewart L. Adams Endowed Scholarship in Teacher Education

The Dr. Stewart L. Adams Endowed Scholarship in Teacher Education was established in 2013. The purpose of this award is to provide financial support to students attending Illinois State University who plan to become teachers. Preference will be given to students who graduated from any high school in Rock Island County in Illinois.

Delora Mast Endowed Teaching Scholarship

The Delora Mast Endowed Teaching Scholarship was established by Karel Thompson to honor her mother's career as an educator. Delora, a full-time mother for many years, returned to school at age 50 to pursue a teaching degree, and graduated from Illinois State University's College of Education in 1965 with a degree in social sciences education. She taught in the Peoria suburbs for more than a decade and was passionate about making a difference in the lives of her students and helping them to understand that learning about history can be fun and interesting.

Michael A. and Abigail M. Jones Family Scholarship

The Michael A. and Abigail M. Jones Family Scholarship was established in 2018 by Michael and Abigail Jones to provide financial assistance for a student enrolled in good standing in the College of Education at Illinois State University. Preference is given to students with demonstrated financial need. Applicants must submit a short essay describing the importance and value of diversity, including students of color, in the field of education.

Roy and Dorothy Hostettler Scholarship

The Roy and Dorothy Hostettler Endowed Scholarship was established in 2007 through a gift from the estate of Roy L. Hostettler. Roy L. Hostettler graduated from ISNU in 1941 with a bachelor's degree in social sciences education. He earned his master's degree from ISNU in 1947 in educational administration. Dorothy Jean (Wilson) Hostettler, who became his wife, graduated from Illinois Wesleyan University in 1940 and later earned a masters degree from ISNU in 1958 in educational supervision. It is the wish of his sister, Barbara Beyer, executor of his estate, that this endowed scholarship be established in honor of Roy and Dorothy Hostettler, to provide financial support to young people planning to become teachers.

Madge E. Bayston Endowed Scholarship in Special Education

The Madge E Bayston Endowed Scholarship was established in October 2013 to provide financial support to students majoring in Special Education at Illinois State University. The scholarship may be renewable for an additional year provided the student re-applies and is selected as the recipient. Ms. Bayston received her BS in Elementary Education and MS in Reading from Illinois State.

Ruth M. Goodwin Scholarship

The Ruth M. Goodwin Scholarship was established in 2004 by Bill Goodwin and family in memory of his wife, Ruth M. Goodwin, a 1943 graduate of Illinois State Normal University. The scholarship is awarded to a student who has completed at least 30 credit hours, majoring in teacher education, with a preference given to those in the 60481 zip code.

Dr. John T. Goeldi Future Teacher Scholarship

The Dr. John T. Goeldi Future Teacher Scholarship endowment was created by the 1997-98 Executive Board of the Student Education Association of Illinois State University in recognition of their faculty advisor. This scholarship is awarded to students who are members of the Student Education Association who have been active for at least two consecutive semesters.

Evelyn Hanson Durdin - Hazel Hanson Scholarship

Th Evelyn Hanson Durdin - Hazel Hanson Scholarship endowment was established in March 1999 by Evelyn Hanson Durdin to honor her mother Hazel Hanson, who encouraged her to reach her career goals. Evelyn earned two teaching certificates, taught in rural and town schools for many years, attended summer school, and graduated from Illinois State in 1946. This scholarship is awarded to students in the College of Education with an interest in teaching.

Nancy G. Swayne Endowed Scholarship

The Nancy G. Swayne Endowed Scholarship was established in 2005 by Marjorie Swayne to honor her daughter, Nancy G. Swayne, who passed away in 1998. Nancy Swayne attended Illinois State from 1964 to 1968, receiving her BS in elementary education. The Nancy G. Swayne Scholarship is awarded to an incoming freshman who has demonstrated leadership involvement in extracurricular and/or community activities. Preference will be given to a graduate of Rock Island High School.

Ann (Rehn) and Wayne French Endowed Scholarship in Teacher Education

The Ann (Rehn) and Wayne French Endowed Scholarship in Teacher Education was established in December 2014 by Wayne French in honor of his beloved wife, Ann, and their nearly 52 years together. The purpose of this scholarship is to provide financial assistance to students who intend to pursue a career in teacher education. Preference will be given to students from Henry County, Illinois.

Gordon Coupland Scholarship

The Gordon Coupland Scholarship was created by family and friends in memory of Gordon Coupland to encourage and recognize students who plan to teach. The scholarship is awarded to students in the College of Education.

Heidi Mullejans Scholarship in Education

The Heidi Mullejans Scholarship in Education was established from the Estate of Monica Hege, Daughter of Illinois State University Alum Heidi Mullejans. Heidi Mullejans received her BS degree in mathematics education in 1959 from Illinois State University. Heidi spent the majority of her career as a high school math teacher for Glenbrook South H.S. in Glenview, IL. She was a beloved and well-known teacher and worked there until her retirement in the 1990s. The scholarship supports students in two areas of study--Math Education sequence and/or Teacher Education, not limited to Math Education for students meeting the following criteria. The scholarship provides no less than $5,000 to a student in the Math Education sequence and no less than $1,500 to any Teacher Education major.

George Manus Memorial Scholarship

The George Manus Memorial Scholarship was established in 2002 upon the death of Helen J. Manus. The purpose of the fund is to provide scholarships for worthy students preparing for teaching careers.

McMullen Family Endowed Scholarship for Teacher Education

The McMullen Family Endowed Scholarship for Teacher Education was established by Drew Jaegle and Jennifer McMullen-Jaegle in 2016. The scholarship supports a student majoring in elementary education with demonstrated financial need. Preference will be given to graduates of Dunlap High School, Dunlap, IL.

Marcella Bunis Stahly and Conrad L. Stahly Endowed Scholarship

The Marcella Bunis Stahly and Conrad L. Stahly Endowed Scholarship was established in 2015. Marcella Bunis, a graduate of Gage Park High School in Chicago, attended Illinois State (Normal) University from 1957 to 1960. She graduated from Salem State College (now Salem State University) in 1974. The purpose of the scholarship is to support students in Elementary Education with an interest in the early years of education.

John Joseph Kennedy Endowed Scholarship

This scholarship was established in 2007 by John Joseph Kennedy. He graduated from Illinois State University in 1961 and received his bachelor of science degree in education, with an English-journalism major. During his time at Illinois State University he held various positions on the school newspaper, the Daily Vidette, and became its editor prior to his graduation. After graduation he relocated to the San Francisco Bay area where he taught high school English, journalism, and social studies. In establishing this scholarship he wished to express his gratitude to the University for the excellent education he received here. Since he was entirely self-supporting while in college, the intent of this scholarship is to assist in making it financially possible for worthy students to attend Illinois State University.

Norman E. Orr Endowed Scholarship Fund

This scholarship was established in 2011 through a gift from the estate of Norman E. Orr. He grew up on a farm near Bloomington, attended Bloomington public schools, and graduated from Illinois State Normal University in 1960. While attending the University he received a scholarship which impacted his education and his lifelong commitment to helping others. He was a man who aimed for excellence in everything he did, which is demonstrated by his thoughtfulness in making provisions through his estate to create a scholarship that would benefit students at Illinois State University, much like he benefitted when he was a student. The purpose of this scholarship is to provide financial support for students who plan to become teachers and have a financial need. Endowment assets are invested in the Illinois State University Foundation's long-term investment pool.

Bon Accord Award

This endowment was established in 1987 by Maureen Brady, a 1967 graduate of Illinois State University. The fund is named for the motto of Aberdeen, Scotland, where her mother's family originated. This scholarship is awarded to a graduate or undergraduate student with a career goal to use emerging technology in educational development for teaching and/or research.

Donald and Gloria Eklund Endowed Scholarship

In order to honor their parents on their 60th wedding anniversary in 2011, David Eklund and his family, together with his siblings (Michael, Julie, and Barbara) and their families, established this scholarship. Donald and Gloria are both graduates of Knoxville High School, and both were valedictorians of their classes, he in 1947 and she in 1948. Because they were valedictorians, they each received state scholarships to attend Illinois State Normal University, where he earned a B.S.E. in 1955 and she earned her B.S.E. in 1952. The purpose of this scholarship is to honor the Eklunds and their education at ISNU in perpetuity, while at the same time providing financial scholarship support for students who plan to become teachers.

Laurie Turilli Endowed Scholarship in Special Education

The Laurie Turilli Endowed Scholarship in Special Education was established in 2016 by Laurie and Larry Turilli. The scholarship provides support for a special education major who has completed their practicum semester and is enrolled in field based or student teaching. Laurie Turilli is a 1978 graduate of Illinois State University with her B.S. degree in Special Education. She taught Special Education for 10 years in Illinois and New York, returning to ISU in 1997 as a Clinical Assistant Professor. Laurie supervised clinical students in their practicum, field based, and student teaching semesters until her retirement in 2017. Her husband, Larry, and daughter, Stacey, are also Illinois State University graduates.

Luelle E. Schultze Scholarship

This fund was established through a bequest by Luelle E. Schultz, and was created out of her desire to honor outstanding students pursuing a career in Elementary Education. Candidates must be a senior at ISU with a major in Elementary Education, a resident of Illinois, and plan to teach in Illinois. Students must have attended ISU for at least 95 percent (115 out of 121 semester hours) of the student's entire undergraduate education, and have a minimum GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale as confirmed by the official ISU transcript. Preference will be given to students who have a proven interest in reading/language arts in the K-6th grade education level.

Ferrell Family Endowment Scholarship for Prof. Dev. Schools

The Ferrell Family Endowed Scholarship for the Professional Development School in the College of Education at Illinois State University was established in December of 2013 by Audrey Ferrell. Ms. Ferrell began her teaching career in 1950 after receiving a two year teaching certificate from Iowa Wesleyan College. She later completed a four year education degree at Illinois State University in 1971. Candidate for the Ferrell Family Endowed Scholarship must be an Elementary Education major who has been accepted into the PDS internship program and attend a Professional Development School.

Barbara Wyne Reading Specialist Scholarship

The Barbara Wyne Reading Specialist Scholarship was established by Barbara Wyne in order to support Graduate students pursuing a degree in Reading.

Larry and Barbara Efaw College of Education Student Success Center Fund

The Larry and Barbara Efaw College of Education Student Success Center Fund was established in 2021 to provided support for the programming, operations, and resources for the Student Success Center.

The Nancy L. Kampmeier College of Education Endowed Scholarship

Nancy was moved to establish the fund to support students entering the profession of education. Nancy was a music education teacher for over 40 years.

The Marilyn Sams Memorial College of Education Scholarship

To establish a fund supporting scholarships for students pursing a degree in education. This scholarship was started to honor Marilyn Sams, (MS '87) a beloved educator for over 23 years who was known among her peers as the "science guru," receiving the Illinois Outstanding Science Teacher award in 1985-1986. Marilyn impacted so many students throughout her career, and her family were moved to create a legacy of the work Marilyn did as a consummate educator, lifelong learner, and supporter of future educators to succeed in the career Marilyn so dearly loved.

Donald F. Templeton Scholarship

The Donald F. Templeton Scholarship was established by his family to honor Don's commitment to education. Don grew up in Waterloo, Iowa; attended college at Iowa State Teachers College (now University of Northern Iowa); served in the US Army during World War II and taught a few years at his high school alma mater before moving his family to Normal in 1950. He taught English and journalism at University High School before moving to Illinois State's administration in 1966, where he served as Assistant to the Dean of Academic Affairs. Don always saw the good in students, making sure they knew they had to do well in their studies to come back into the university community after academic probation. His children still hear from former students who, because of "Mr. T", were allowed to return to graduate and succeed in life.

Grady Student Teacher Scholarship

The Grady Student Teacher Scholarship was established by Anne Grady in order to assist in defraying the cost of education for majors in the College of Education during their required clinical or student teaching sequence.

Future Educator Award Focusing on Public Education

The Future Educator Award Focusing on Public Education was established by Robert Fisher and Beverly Roberts in order to help those that are perusing education in Special Education or Secondary Education in Social Sciences.

Bette J. Soldwedel Endowment

This endowment was established in 1987 by a bequest of Bette J. Soldwedel. The purpose of this endowment is to support the educational partnership between Pekin Public School District #108 and Illinois State University.

Carroll and Judith Sigler Educator Scholarship

The Carroll and Judith Sigler Educator Scholarship was established by Carroll Sigler in order to leave a legacy for future educators and honor the careers of both Carroll and Judith who dedicated their lives to teaching. The goal of this scholarship is to provide funding for Redbirds during their student teaching semester.

Warren F. Craig Memorial Scholarship in COE

The Warren F. Craig Memorial Scholarship in the College of Education was established in memory of Warren F. Craig who was an educator for many years. Warren F. Craig was an educator and teacher, spending the majority of his career in Unit District 5 (Normal, IL) and retiring as the first Reading Coordinator for the district. Warren and his wife Joybelle strongly believed in education, equality, and cultural diversity. they were a host family for many ISU international students after he retired from teaching. Warren was "born and raised" in Fairbury, IL. After graduating from Fairbury High he followed in his father's footsteps and enrolled at Illinois State Normal University. His studies were interrupted by WW II, but after his Army service as a pharmacist's mate in Aleutian Islands he returned to finish his bachelor's degree at ISNU. He later obtained a Master's from the University of Illinois. Warren passed away in 2015 at the age of 94.

Judith A. Bernoteit Memorial Scholarship in Elementary Education

The Judith A. Bernoteit Memorial Scholarship in Elementary Education was established by Bob and Stephanie Bernoteit in honor of Bob's aunt, Judith A. Bernoteit, and her more than 40 years of teaching at Crystal Lawns Elementary School in Joliet, IL.

John Joseph Hoover Endowed Special Education Scholarship

The John Joseph Hoover Special Education Endowed Special Education Scholarship was established by John J Hoover in order to support graduate level students enrolled in the LBS1 program. John is a 1973 Special Education graduate who has dedicated his career to preparing students to enter the profession of teaching special education.

Julie and Bob Dobski Early Childhood Education Scholarship

The Julie and Bob Dobski Early Childhood Education Scholarship was established by Little Jewels Learning Center in 2023 in order to emphasize the significance of Early Childhood teachers.

Minnie Vautrin Memorial Scholarship

Wilhelmina "Minnie" Vautrin was an ISU alum who was a Christian missionary in China for 28 years. She is known for the care and protection of at least 10,000 Chinese refugees during the Nanjing Massacre. The Minnie Vautrin Memorial Scholarship was established by Thomas Lucey in 2024 to honor her heroism.

Mueller-Mais Family Scholarship

The Mueller-Mais Family Scholarship was established by Barbara Ann Mais, a 1962 College of Education graduate who had a successful and rewarding career as an educator. Barbara had support and encouragement from her parents, Betty and Hans Mueller and honors them with this scholarship Barbara wants to continue to support others in the College of Education with the creation of this scholarship.

Diane L. Arnhold Scholarship in Elementary Education

The Diane L. Arnhold Scholarship in Elementary Education was established by Diane L. Arnhold in 2023 to provide financial support to students majoring in Elementary Education at Illinois State University.

The Julie and Bob Dobski Early Childhood Education Student Impact Fund was established by Little Jewels Learning Center in order to provide financial support for Early Childhood Education students experiencing unexpected hardship.

Marguerite Graffy Memorial Scholarship Fund

The Marguerite Graffy Memorial Scholarship Fund was established in memory of Marguerite Graffy by her niece Mardel Graffy. Marguerite Graffy was a Music Teacher and Administrator for 40 years. The goal of this scholarship is to provide assistance to those wanting to pursue a career in education.

Dr. Tom Crumpler Scholarship

The Dr. Tom Crumpler Scholarship was established by Thomas Lucey in order to support the College of Education. Dr. Tom Crumpler was an accomplished faculty member in the School of Teaching and Learning (TCH). His research focused on formative assessment in literacy, teacher identity, and process drama as a tool for learning. During his tenure at Illinois State University, he directed the Mary and Jean Borg Center for Reading and Literacy, The Reading Recovery Program, and the doctoral program, and he took on other leadership roles, such as co-editor of Action in Teacher Education, a national peer-reviewed academic journal. He was also a recipient of the College of Education's Outstanding Researcher Award. The Dr. Tom Crumpler Scholarship is being established by Thomas Lucey to honor Dr. Crumpler's dedication to the College of Education.
